Learn all about the human brain with the Festival of Social Science in November

The local community are being given the opportunity to learn more about the human brain when the Economic and Social Research Council’s Festival of Social Science comes to the Grosvenor Shopping Centre this November.

A free to attend drop-in centre will be open on Saturday 9 November between 10am and 3pm in the centre of the Macclesfield mall, where a range of free activities, demonstrations and complex tasks will be available for event-goers of all ages – right from pre-school children – who are eager to learn about psychology and the weird and wonderful ways the mind works.

Psychologists from Staffordshire University will also be on hand to explain the activities on offer, as well as the research and theories behind them.

Among the activities available on the day is mirror drawing, which will demonstrate the process involved in learning. There will be several creative craft sessions, during which visitors will be able to create a brain hat and a pet dinosaur.

The ESRC Festival of Social Science is a celebration of the social sciences and will be held between 2-9 November 2019, with 450 events being held across the UK. Each will cover a wide range of topics; including: AI, mental health, sexuality, parenting, weather, gender, ageing, love, death, economics and education, to name but a few.

Ed Kennedy, general manager at the Grosvenor Shopping Centre, said: “We’re delighted to be welcoming the team from the Economic and Social Research Council to the shopping centre.

“There has always been a natural intrigue with the human brain and how the mind works, and I think visitors are going to be left amazed by the demonstrations and activities the organisation, and the psychologists from Staffordshire University, have got planned on the day.”

A spokesperson for the Economic Research Council added: “We are looking forward to visiting the Grosvenor Shopping Centre with lots of fun activities and demonstrations to intrigue people about the mysteries of the human mind.

“The event is supported by the Economic and Social Research Council and is one of over 400 events taking place nationwide as part of the 17th Festival of Social Science. Staff and students from the Psychology Department at Staffordshire University are excited to be taking part in the festival and bringing psychology to the Grosvenor shopping centre this November.”
